Fun memoir with a healthy dash of history

Fun memoir with a healthy dash of history
The second of Buford's memoirs, it's just as enjoyable and humorous as the first. This one featured a good deal more history, but that's not a detractor - the recap of history was entertaining and just enough to bring the reader up to speed with the context. As always, Buford sees the humor in every situation. My favorite part of the entire book was the section about étoile insurance: I laughed out loud, then read it to my husband, who also laughed. Peak situational/ real life comedy. Highly recommended for those who enjoy memoirs with humor and a dash of history.

I missed the first book in this series describing the adventures of the family of an American foreign service official living in India. This second installment, in which the family follows the wife to,Paris is so enjoyable, I may go back to check out the original.
If you have ever been to Paris or are just daydreaming about such a trip, this book is sure to entertain you. The author has put his own career on the back burner to support his wife and take care of their three children while she takes on a highly coveted assignment in the French Capitol.
The book is a rollicking story of a family open to new adventures. The author describes people, places and food with a great idea for detail. It makes a fun story but can also serve as a great travel guide. He provides geographic and historic detail that could add so much to a trip.
There is so much affection in this book that you will want to become family friends with the author and start packing for their next adventure.

The first book, about life in India, was so good I immediately started this one. Obviously, there's much to learn about life in Paris, but also about life as a US Diplomat. What sounds like a glamorous job has its downsides: good or difficult assignments, family separations during moves and training, etc. But, this author not only handles it all with grace, but we learn he has passed the Foreign Service exam himself, and selflessly turns down his own dream of Diplomatic service to be a stay-at-home dad and follow his wife's career.

We are treated to walking tours of Paris, delightful episodes of friends/family visits, and the incredible French school and child-care system - America could learn a lot from them!

Another fun read by this amazing dad, handling three young children in a foreign country with humor, innovations and patience. Highly recommended.

I think I enjoyed the first book when the family was in India a little more than this one, but this book that takes place in Paris is also entertaining. The author takes his job as a dad seriously--I was very touched by the thought he put into raising his kids, his common sense and his love for his kids.

Keep in mind that the events in this book took place just about 20 years ago so the kids are pretty much grown. What's great is that they have lived-in more places since then so there are probably a few more books on the horizon. I wonder where they are headed next.

I did not give this book five stars because I thought the humor and stories seemed forced which made me a bit anxious. Still, very enjoyable.

A friend of mine is in the foreign service with her husband and young children. What an amazing life they lead.

A true account of a humorous/laid back dad and a pack of children doing Paris/France, dishing out tourist info, food advice, as well as explaining how they arrived at that very moment, and where they go next. Here is an untraditional family (Mom Works, Dad manages children/household/education/doctors, etc.). There are nice contrasts between this open-minded family, French tradition, & the culture of American Diplomats. A wide variety of family members and friends visit, each with their expectations, showing all flavors of Americans in a foreign location. All experiences feel real. LOVED THIS BOOK.

When you have the chance to get to know an author and his wife personally, you might feel obligated to read his books. That feeling gets replaced with total satisfaction by savoring every detail of the family’s adventures in foreign countries. Such a gifted storyteller recounts everyday family life with humor, honesty, and travel details of places I will never get to visit in person. From the beginning recounting of how Greg and Dana got together at TAMU my emotions ran the gamut of laughing out loud all the way through to the poignancy of the visit from Aunt Ethel. These world travelers just began a new adventure with her posting in Turkmenistan (sans grown children) so I can hardly wait to read all about this next chapter.

This book is great! It’s a lighthearted, humorous and affectionate look at life, family, foreign diplomatic service, and the people around us. Greg is invisibly very comfortable in his own skin, and that comes across as very empowering and funny! I’ve not yet been to Paris, but this book is a WEALTH of knowledge and education on the City of Paris, French culture and French history. I was sad when the book ended! I goofed because it seems one should read the book about India first, as it comes before this one chronologically. I found this to be a very fun book to read!
