PRAISE FOR DAVID WRAGG:
‘Reminds me of Abercrombie’s THE BLADE ITSELF’
Nicholas Eames, author of KINGS OF THE WYLD
‘Refreshing and entertaining, like a cross between Nicholas Eames and Joe Abercrombie; THE BLACK HAWKS is simply a joy to read’
Peter McLean, author of PRIEST OF BONES
‘Wragg captures the classic fantasy spirit of adventure and exploration, wraps it with stabbed backs and cannibals and gifts it to you on a bed of action’
Ed McDonald, author of BLACKWING
‘Everyone loves a good mercenary tale, but THE BLACK HAWKS offers more besides: a protagonist who's refreshingly rubbish at fighting, a supporting cast who'd be fascinating if they were just standing around in a supermarket, and an author who knows when to dodge cliches, and when to jump in and splash like a kid in a puddle’
Nate Crowley, author of 100 BEST VIDEO GAMES (THAT NEVER EXISTED)
‘Check out THE BLACK HAWKS – it’s full of fun characters, mercenary antics, twists, turns, and contains my favourite fantasy lemon’
Peter Newman, Gemmell Award-winning author of THE VAGRANT and THE DEATHLESS
‘A remarkably assured debut…I can’t wait to see what happens next’
Anna Stephens, author of GODBLIND
About the Author
Dave Wragg really got into writing stories just as he finished English GCSE, then took about twenty years to get back to it. In the meantime, he studied software engineering, worked in global shipping and technical consultancy, and once spent a year in the Foreign Office ‘hiding in the basement’.
He currently does Software Odd Jobs around central London. In his vanishingly rare free time (when not working, writing, or enjoying the fruits of parenthood), he tries to consume as much digital entertainment as possible, as well as reading genre fiction and enjoying the odd board game. Some of them are very odd indeed.
Dave lives in Hertfordshire with his wife, two small daughters and two smaller cats.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2023This was a real page turner. I'd enjoyed Wragg's first 2 books from the Articles of Faith series and was looking forward to more dark comedy and excellent banter and this didn't disappoint. If you've read the first series then you'll enjoy the little Easter eggs but you definitely don't need to read the first 2 books to enjoy or follow this story.
As well as the strong female characters, fast paced action and witty retorts, what I really appreciated about this book was the short chapters which meant in theory I could read a chapter before bed without staying up past my bedtime. In reality I'd stay up until the small hours thinking, ahhh go on just one more chapter.
It's testament to Wragg's writing style and story telling that I read this book within a week which is a record for me. I cannot wait for the next two books in the series!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2024David Wragg’s The Hunters is a fast paced and addictive story that follows Ree and her twelve year old niece Javani. After many years moving from place to place, they have settled on a farm in a mining community in the middle of nowhere. When a group of killers comes to the town looking for a young girl and an older woman, Ree and Javani are forced to flee across the desert and mountains. A deadly chase occurs, but will Ree be able to keep them both alive and keep her secrets intact?
David Wragg is such a fantastic writer and I knew going in that I was going to love this one. The story is full of twists and surprise moments and there’s plenty of action and edge of your seat moments. Wragg has a writing style that’s really gripping and there were lots of times I told myself I should put this book down but ended up reading one more chapter. The witty dialogue works really well and the sandy desert setting really comes to life in Wragg’s prose.
The Hunters has some really compelling characters and I found myself really growing attached to Ree, Javani and of course Aki and Anashe. The characters are really well crafted and it was really interesting the way family dynamics were explored between these characters. While there are some light hearted moments in the story, there are also plenty of dark and gritty moments too. The Hunters is the first book in this series and I can’t wait to see where Wragg takes the story next. If you’ve read The Black Hawks you’ll absolutely fall in love with The Hunters . If you’re looking for a fast paced, blood thirsty fantasy tale to sink your teeth into, you definitely don’t want to miss this one.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2024Sharp, witty, smart. Enjoyed it a lot
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 July 2023Another great romp through David Wragg's imagination!
The banter between the characters is amazing. David Wragg is a genius at dialogue. The comedy is there again, I literally laughed aloud, which is not something I ever do. Very much fantasy wild west and a lot of fun!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 August 2024An interesting world brought to life with a distinctive outback feel to it, think western cowboys but with swords and crossbows.
Great start. With some truely unique characters introduced its a shame that all they do is bicker! The first big chase sequence was great. The second simply got tedious, and I was losing interest fast.
Also, the bickering between the two protagonists and the supporting characters got aggravating to the point that I started skipping the dialogue to then return, and I find they are still bickering about the same thing!
P.S. The white spear is bloody awesome!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 July 2023Loved the article's of faith series best new fantasy books ive read in years. Please read you will not regret.
