The Cancer Roadmap: Real science to guide your treatment path Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

What is cancer? What causes it, and why do some people get it, while others don’t?

And with so much conflicting information now available – who can we really trust for sensible medical advice anyway?

‘We wholeheartedly recommend The Cancer Roadmap’ The Bone Cancer Research Trust

‘This book is essential, both a courageous no-nonsense companion and a comforting balm.’ Donna Ashworth

We all want certainty and hope for ourselves or those we love after a cancer diagnosis, but what we really need is honesty and truth.

In The Cancer Roadmap, breast cancer surgeon and three-time cancer patient Dr Liz O’Riordan confronts the big cancer truths (and myths), offering clear, evidence-based answers. She breaks down the latest research to give the facts you need to make informed treatment decisions that are right for you or your loved one.

She gives definitive answers to common questions such as:

  • Is it your fault you got cancer?
  • Do you need to stop drinking alcohol?
  • Can you cure cancer by changing your diet?
  • Does alternative medicine work better than chemo?

Dr Liz also suggests meaningful, practical steps to reduce the risk of future recurrence, even when the odds feel stacked against you.

Let her guide you through your cancer journey with confidence and clarity, and give you the best chance of your cure.

Incredibly helpful and reassuring information in this book. There is so much information on cancer treatment and causes for us to wade through which causes intense anxiety. Liz’s straightforward style helps make sense of all that information and gives those of us with cancer tools to help us choose what is best for ourselves. Liz is speaking as someone who has researched so much of the cancer information we all try to sort through from the viewpoint of a physician who treated cancer patients, who lives with her own cancer, and cared for parents with cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars So clear and readable. This will really help you.

Although diagnosed with stage 3 womb cancer a couple of years ago, I was given Liz's book on breast cancer at the time (written with Trish Greenhalgh) because there was plenty in there to help, especially lots of good advice about exercising during treatment. (Do it!!) I then found Liz on Twitter, followed her to Bluesky, go walking with her podcasts in my ear, heard her speak at the Every Woman festival in Cardiff and pre-ordered this book as soon as news of it came out. Am I a Liz O'Riordan fan? Definitely! As a teacher, I know the importance of accurate information, clearly delivered and as a cancer patient I know only too well the importance of finding a clear voice in the turmoil of a diagnosis. Liz is that much needed voice. Her style is as engaging as it is detailed and informative. It's a very 'readable' book and I learnt SO MUCH along the way. She explains the terminology, the way drugs and treatments are developed and tested, and cuts through the hype and the fake information. I now have a much better understanding of risk and feel empowered to more critically assess the cancer claims out there. She also faces head on the very real fear of recurrence and gives honest advice about how to live your life going forward. I will return again and again to this book.

A clear , concise and crucial book for any cancer patient and their own journey..
Dr Liz is open and honest with a no frills approach, just plain evidence based facts. These answer a multitude of questions. The questions you may have and you want to know you can trust implicitly her reply. It’s a book I wished I’d had at the start of my journey but am pleased to add it to my ‘must have’ books as I continue onwards. Thank you Liz for being everyone’s empowering and guiding light in the dark.

Clear, easy to read, very informative. Explains all the jargon, letters and numbers used on the Oncology letters and in conversations that made no sense when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2023. Typical of Liz O'Riordan to produce another great book that deals sensitively with such a difficult topic and explains in a way that is not condescending but like someone putting their arm around your shoulder leading through the dark times. I fully recommend this to all those dealing with a disease that irrevocably changes your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, understandable and cuts through the nonsense
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 16, 2025
Like many people, my social media feed is constantly assaulted by posts of people claiming that they have the perfect diet to avoid or cure cancer, or that chemical xyz causes cancer so you should avoid one product and buy the one they offer etc etc. Although I have not suffered from cancer, close family members and friends have, so I understand how damaging and ‘toxic’ those kinds of posts and promises can be. So it is very refreshing to read a book by someone clearly knowledgeable on the topic to help you navigate through all the crap and with research and evidence to support. It is still astonishing that so many believe that doctors and healthcare providers are hiding cures for cancer - as said in the book, if there was evidence to support a treatment working, it would be part of the cancer treatment protocol. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to those struggling to find the truth amongst the tidal wave of nonsense.
I also hope that it doesn’t trigger those who are pushing fake treatments on cancer sufferers to attack people like Dr O’Riordan and those like her who are fighting misinformation.
