- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024This album was intended to be a double album originally, and the record company made Jeff Lynne cut the album down to a single album. That was a crime against the universe!
They should have left him alone and let him do it the way he wanted to!
Secret Messages is a fantastic album. It's not quite as good as their other double album Out Of The Blue, but it still has some great songs on it.
The extra songs added back in that were left off the original release help make it even better.
The only song missing was the song "Beatles Forever" which Jeff has said he never plans to release.
I've heard this song, and I understand why he's not too enamored with it, so I have no issue with that one being left off the album.
One small gripe. The instrumental "After All" is the short version. It's just a little over a minute long. There is a version of this same track that was released a few years prior to this double album release which is about a minute longer, and it was a crime to cut this track short, because it's an absolutely beautiful song. it should have remained in it's full length version. It certainly wasn't edited down because of running time on that side of the album, because there were several free minutes left on that side. It would have fit with no problem.
Of the added in tracks that were cut from the original release, the best ones, IMO, are "Time After Time" (which wasn't on the original LP, but was on the original cassette and CD), "Mandalay", "After All" and the album closer "Hello My Old Friend" (which was supposed to be the final ELO song, as this was going to be the last ELO album, but due to the record company making Jeff cut this album down to a single LP, he owned them one more album to fulfill his recording contract). HMOF is a fantastic song, very Beatlesque, and even harks back to the very first song on the very first ELO album. It would have been the perfect "bookend" to ELO's career, had the record company left Jeff alone and let him do things the way he saw fit.
I highly recommend this album!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024Package came on time as promised..Package came in very good shape very happy with this buy and will be buying from this seller in the future thank you...
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2006This album is simply outstanding, one of ELO's 3 very best (along with "A New World Record" and "Out of the Blue"). I don't normally fall in love with albums upon first listen, needing a little time to get into and used to them - but "Secret Messages" blew me away with each highly diverse and multi-layered and multi-faceted cut the very first time heard back in 1983.
Its predescessor album "Time" was clever as heck but somewhat self-conscious as a concept album to my ears, so "Secret Messages" felt like an incredible return to classic ELO form. The first four songs in particular are mindblowing - what a way to start a new world record!
Here's the track list of the original unreleased double album:
Side A
1. Secret Messages
2. Loser Gone Wild
3. Bluebird
4. Take Me On And On
Side B
5. Stranger
6. No Way Out
7. Beatles Forever
8. Letter From Spain
9. Danger Ahead
Side C
10. Four Little Diamonds
11. Train Of Gold
12. Endless Lies
13. Buildings Have Eyes
14. Rock 'n' Roll Is King
Side D
15. Mandalay
16. Time After Time
17. After All
18. Hello My Old Friend
All these songs are on the remastered version except for "Buildings Have Eyes", "Mandalay", "Hello My Old Friend" (these three on "Afterglow"), and the almost impossible-to-find tribute "Beatles Forever" (whose lyrics can be found at [...]%20FOREVER.htm). So you can patch together something close to the original unreleased album using iTunes, which is well worth the trouble.
Here are some thought-provoking excerpted "secret" comments from Paul F. Johnson that only appear on the Amazon review of the unremastered CD: "Jeff Lynne solely became ELO at this point and he also found the sweet spot as a producer and singer. ... The Willburys sound was born in this album. I am still not sure how he got that overly processed-yet-dry sound that is the Jeff Lynne trademark, but it really seems to have begun with 'Secret Messages.' ... Rick Rubin and Jeff Lynne have done as much for the sound of what we hear today as anyone, and this CD is a good source for understanding why."
Also on this Amazon review thread, Ernie Clark misguidedly rates only 1 star (!#?!@*!) with the explanation that "I would be giving this remastered version of ELO's classic 'Secret Messages' cd five stars if it weren't for the fact that it's missing the final 33 second outro that was on the original cd and vinyl album. How could Jeff Lynne leave out this part of the cd?" I don't know what to say about Ernie's CD, but that spooky 33 second outro is DEFINITELY on the remastered CD that I bought. So how about restoring those missing 4 stars?!?

5.0 out of 5 stars ... are calling to me endlessly!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums never to be released
I'm an ELO fan and I reckon this is the last true ELO album. I've not been impressed with anything released after Secret Messages. Way back in 1983 I was massively disappointed when this album came out as a single when the band had said it was to be a double. As a single it was still a good album but as a double: WOW. Side 4 is perhaps one of the greatest single sides of any ELO album yet when this was condensed into a single album none of the tracks from side 4 made it onto the single album. My only disappointment is that this double is not the original double because (1) it doesn't include Beatles Forever (2) the inner sleeves don't have the printed lyrics (3) they've used the single album artwork instead of that artwork designed for the original double (4) the quality of the album sleeve artwork is not as good as the 1983 artwork even though it is the same artwork - it is as if they've just taken a scan of the original artwork. Hopefully one day the album will be released as the 1983 original.
